Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

The candidate must be a citizen of India or possess the nationality prescribed under Rule-7 of the Gujarat Civil Services Classification and Recruitment (General) Rules, 1967.

Educational Qualification

  • A bachelor’s degree from any university established or incorporated by or under a Central or State Act in India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Government.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications as prescribed under the Gujarat Civil Services Classification and Recruitment (General) Rules, 1967.
  • Adequate knowledge of Gujarati or Hindi, or both.

Candidates who do not currently hold a certificate for basic computer knowledge can still apply, but they must produce such a certificate before appointment; otherwise they will not be eligible for appointment.

Age Limit

As on 29 July 2026, the candidate’s age must not be less than 20 years and not more than 40 years. The upper age limit may be relaxed for candidates already in Gujarat Government service, as per the applicable rules. Age relaxation for other categories is as follows:

Salary / Pay Scale

Selected candidates will be appointed on a fixed monthly pay of Rs. 40,800/- for the first five years, along with other benefits admissible under the relevant Finance Department resolutions. On satisfactory completion of five years of service, the candidate becomes eligible for regular appointment in the 7th Pay Commission pay scale of Rs. 35,400/- to Rs. 1,12,400/- (Level-6), subject to the outcome of SLP No. 14124/2012 and SLP No. 14125/2012 pending before the Supreme Court.

The fee must be paid only online through Debit Card, Internet Banking, UPI or Wallet, on or before 1 August 2026 (11:59 PM). A transaction fee will apply in addition to the examination fee. The fee paid is refundable only to those candidates who actually appear for the examination; it will not be refunded to candidates who do not appear.

Selection Process

The selection process for the English Stenographer, Grade-2 post consists of the following stages:

1. Qualifying Test (Shorthand Test)

  • Dictation of an English passage in shorthand at a speed of 80 words per minute for two minutes, followed by transcription at a speed of 7 words per minute (in legible handwriting, not typing).
  • This test checks the candidate’s shorthand-writing ability; only candidates who meet the required skill level are declared eligible for the Main Examination.

2. Main Examination

Paper-1: English Language Proficiency and Computer Knowledge (Descriptive and Objective) – 100 Marks, 2 Hours

The Basic Computer Knowledge portion (20 marks) covers computer basics, software (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, Windows, Indic), working with internet and email, and basics of networking and cyber security.

Paper-2: Skill Test (Shorthand and Transcription Typing) – 100 Marks

  • Dictation of 2 passages of 4 minutes each (8 minutes total) at a shorthand speed of 100 words per minute in English.
  • Transcription/typing time: 50 minutes, done on a computer.
  • For every 3 errors in transcription, 1 mark will be deducted from the allotted marks.
  • Minimum qualifying marks for Paper-2 is 50; marks below 50 are treated as zero.

The minimum qualifying marks for Paper-1 is 40 and for Paper-2 is 50. The final merit list is prepared out of the total 200 marks from both papers, and there will be no waiting list for this recruitment.

How to Apply

  2. Click on “Online Application” and select GSSSB.
  3. Click “Apply Now,” then “Skip” to open the application form, and fill in the Personal Details (fields marked with a red asterisk are mandatory).
  4. Fill in the Educational Details.
  5. Accept the Assurance/declaration by selecting “Yes,” then click “Save” to complete the application and generate the Application Number.
  6. Upload your photograph and signature in JPG format (photo: 5 cm height x 3.6 cm width; signature: 2.5 cm height x 7.5 cm width; each file up to 15 KB).
  7. Click “Confirm Application,” enter the Application Number and Birth Date, review all details carefully, and confirm. Note that no changes are possible after confirmation.
  8. Click “Print Application” to download and save a copy of the confirmed application form.
  9. Pay the examination fee online through the “Print Application Form / Pay Fees” option before the fee payment deadline, and save the payment receipt.

Important Instructions

  • Only one application should be submitted per candidate; if multiple applications are submitted, only the last confirmed application will be considered valid.
  • No changes can be made to the category (caste) details or any other information after the application is confirmed.
  • Candidates must keep their original certificates ready, as details in the application must match these certificates exactly; discrepancies can lead to rejection at any stage.
  • The same photograph uploaded during application must be used throughout the recruitment process, including at the exam center and during document verification.
  • Keep the mobile number and email ID provided in the application active until the recruitment process is complete, as important updates will be sent through SMS/email.
  • Candidates found using unfair means, submitting false information, or violating the Gujarat Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2023 will face disqualification and legal action.
