Eligibility Criteria for BPSSC Forest Range Officer

Nationality

Candidates must be Indian citizens. Male, Female, and Third Gender candidates are eligible to apply.

Educational Qualification (as on 1 August 2025)

A candidate must hold at least one of the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with at least one subject from: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or Zoology, from a recognized university, OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent institution.

Age is calculated based on the date of birth recorded in the Matriculation (10th) or equivalent certificate.

Age Relaxation

  • Bihar government employees: 5 years’ relaxation in maximum age limit for those who have completed a minimum of 3 years of regular service, for appearing in competitive exams to move to a higher pay scale/cadre.
  • Ex-servicemen (for civil posts): 3 years’ relaxation plus relaxation equal to the length of defence service, provided actual age does not exceed 57 years as on the cut-off date.

A minimum expansion of 5 cm is mandatory. There is no chest measurement requirement for female candidates. For Third Gender (Kinnar/Kothi/Hijra/Transgender) candidates, the physical standards and Physical Efficiency Test criteria are the same as prescribed for the BC category.

Salary / Pay Scale

The selected Forest Range Officer will be placed at Pay Level-6 (Rs. 35,400 – Rs. 1,12,400) as per the 7th Pay Commission matrix. The notification does not specify a separate in-hand or gross salary figure including allowances.

Fee once paid successfully will not be refunded, except in cases where the amount is deducted but registration fails due to technical/bank issues – in such cases, the amount will be refunded by the payment gateway within 7 working days.

Selection Process for Forest Range Officer

Selection is made through a Written Examination, Interview, and Physical Efficiency Test.

Written Examination Pattern

Candidates equal to 6 times the number of vacancies (category-wise, based on merit in the written exam) will be shortlisted and called for interview. This ratio may be reduced if a sufficient number of qualified candidates are not available for a category.

Interview

The interview carries 50 marks. Marks obtained in the interview are added to the written exam score to prepare the final merit list.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

Conducted as per Rule 8(4) of the Bihar Forest Range Officer Cadre (Recruitment and Service Conditions) Rules, 2013, for candidates called for interview:

Candidates who fail the Physical Efficiency Test will not be recommended for appointment, irrespective of their marks in the written exam and interview.

Medical Examination

Candidates who clear the Physical Efficiency Test undergo a medical examination by a medical team constituted by the Commission. Selected candidates must be fully fit mentally and physically, free from any physical defect that could hinder efficient discharge of duties. As per the notification, a person with one eye will not be recommended for appointment.

Final Merit List & Tie-Breaking Rules

  • The merit list is prepared category-wise based on combined marks of the written exam and interview.
  • If two or more candidates score equal marks, preference goes to the candidate older in age (based on date of birth).
  • If age is also the same, preference is given based on higher educational qualification.
  • If still tied, preference follows the English alphabetical order of the candidate’s name as per the 10th board certificate.

Documents Required

Based on the notification’s eligibility and cancellation clauses, candidates should keep the following ready:

  • Matriculation (10th)/equivalent certificate (for date of birth proof)
  • Educational qualification certificates/degree as specified above
  • Caste certificate (for SC/ST/BC/EBC candidates, where applicable) – for married reserved-category women, caste certificate must be issued based on the father’s details, not the husband’s, since caste is determined by birth, not marriage
  • Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) certificate for BC/EBC candidates – for women candidates (married or unmarried), valid only if issued based on father’s details
  • Domicile/permanent residence certificate of Bihar (reservation benefits, including 35% women’s reservation, apply only to bona fide residents of Bihar)
  • Income and asset certificate for EWS candidates, based on financial year 2025-26, in the prescribed format
  • Third Gender identity certificate issued by the District Magistrate (where applicable)
  • Freedom fighter’s descendant proof (where applicable)
  • Scanned photograph and signature (as per specifications below)

How to Apply Online for BPSSC Forest Range Officer 2026

  1. Visit the official BPSSC website: https://bpssc.bihar.gov.in
  2. Part 1 – Registration: Enter name, nationality, mobile number, email ID, Bihar domicile status, reservation category, gender, and date of birth.
  3. Complete the fee payment. After successful registration, a Registration ID and Password will be sent via SMS and email.
  4. Candidates can edit their registration details before payment. After payment, details cannot be edited directly – a “Cancel Registration” option must be used instead, but the fee already paid will not be refunded, and a fresh fee must be paid for a new registration.
  5. Part 2 – Application Form: Log in using the Registration ID and Password, and fill in father’s/husband’s name, mother’s name, address, and educational qualification details.
  6. Upload the scanned photograph and signature as per the specifications above.
  7. Review all details using the “Edit Details” option before final submission. Once submitted and confirmed, no changes can be made.
  8. After final submission, a confirmation message (SMS/email) will be sent to the registered mobile number and email ID, which completes the application process.
  9. Take a printout of the Acknowledgement on A4-size paper and preserve it for future reference/correspondence.

Only one online application can be submitted per candidate, and only one application can be submitted per mobile number. Multiple applications by the same candidate will lead to rejection of all such applications.

Important Instructions

  • Applications sent by post or any other offline mode will not be considered, and no request for correction through such modes will be entertained.
  • The last date for online application will not be extended under any circumstances.
  • The candidate’s mobile number and email ID used at registration will remain the only mode of communication until the final stage of recruitment; the Commission is not responsible for issues arising from an incorrect, invalid, or disconnected number/email.
  • Candidates from states other than Bihar must apply under the Unreserved (General) category; the age limit and other eligibility criteria applicable to the Unreserved category will apply to them.
  • The entire selection process is expected to take approximately 6 months. Candidates are advised to keep themselves available accordingly. Requests for extension of time at any stage – including for personal, family, medical, bone fracture, or pregnancy-related reasons – will not be entertained.
  • Furnishing false information, wrong reservation category claims, incorrect date of birth or gender, impersonation, or misconduct during the exam will lead to rejection/cancellation of candidature and may invite legal action.
  • Candidates involved in any criminal case/activity are liable to have their candidature rejected.
